What is an MOT?

An MOT is designed to prove your vehicle is safe to drive and roadworthy. An MOT will ensure your vehicle has been properly maintained and meets requirements of the law. It is a legal requirement for cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles older than 3 years to have one. An MOT is not a guarantee that a vehicle is in good mechanical condition.

What happens if my vehicle fails its MOT?

Following the failed MOT, you will be given a VT3O certificate that lists items of failure. At Whites Autocentre, we will make it very clear what repairs or changes are required in order for your vehicle to pass another test. There is no limit on time before a retest so it is at your discretion. Just remember that your vehicle isn’t legally allowed to be on the road without a valid MOT certificate.

How long does it take?

An MOT test takes around 45 minutes to complete.

The Importance of an MOT

The MOT - or Ministry of Transport test - is a crucial part of ensuring that the cars on the UK’s roads retain a basic level of roadworthiness. First introduced back in 1960, it’s now a core part of running and maintaining a car here in the UK. Now that the...

Can’t I just drive without an MOT?

Absolutely not. If you are caught, you will be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £100, unless you are driving to a test station. Though no penalty points are issued if you’re found to be driving without an MOT, a fine could be imposed by the courts up to the tune...

Are any cars exempt from needing an MOT?

There are a small number of cars which don’t need to get an MOT in order to drive legally. These include goods vehicles powered by electricity and registered before March 1, 2015, and classic cars which were built or first registered more than 40 years ago. Call...

What happens when my car passes?

When your vehicle passes the MOT test, you’ll be issued with a pass certificate from the test centre, while the pass will also be logged onto a national database. You’ll also get a list of any ‘minor’ or ‘advisory’ issues which need to be looked at and rectified in...

How much should an MOT cost me?

Though you’ll likely have seen garages advertising ‘special offer’ deals on MOTs, the reality is that the maximum they can charge by law is £54.85. As with most things, it pays to shop around to make sure that you’re paying the right amount. Whites Autocentres pride...

Information About MOTs

Once a car is three years old (four years in Northern Ireland) it must be MOT tested each year to check it meets road safety and environmental standards.

This Ministry of Transport test is commonly known as an ‘MOT’.

MOT tests are carried out at authorised test centres around the country such as Whites Auto Centre Plymouth, all of which display an official blue sign featuring three white triangles.

An MOT test in Plymouth (and other places) involves dozens of checks on your car, ranging from the brakes and fuel system to lights, mirrors, seatbelts, windscreen wipers and exhaust system.

How long does an MOT test take at Whites Auto Centre? An average MOT test takes around 1h, but there are a couple of other things to take into consideration.

First, if your vehicle fails the test and repairs are needed this will take longer.

A test centre isn’t allowed to let you drive away a car that has failed an MOT until the problems are fixed, unless your existing MOT certificate is still valid, or you’re taking the car to have the faults fixed.

Second, the test might take an hour or less, but, even if there aren’t any repairs, this doesn’t mean your vehicle will only have to be at the garage for 60 minutes.

MOT Test centres can require you to drop your vehicle off first thing in the morning and collect it when ready.

This means you should be prepared to be without your vehicle for the day.
